When it comes to having sensitive skin, figuring out a proper skincare routine can be tricky business. Especially when it comes to exfoliating, since that can be a whole thing in itself. For general tips and tricks on how to exfoliate, click here. In this blog post, I’m going to give you a list of 3 exfoliating products you absolutely need in your regimen if you have sensitive skin (or honestly just in general).
Unfortunately, a lot of people might not know if they have sensitive skin and can be using products that are way too harsh for their skin. If you find your skin tends to breakout when using new products, or can easily turn red when washing/touching your face, then you probably have some degree of sensitive skin. Which is completely normal, it’s just a matter of finding products that work for you and your skin type. So here we go, let’s break down each of these items.
The best exfoliating serum for sensitive skin
Farmacy Honeymoon Glow AHA Resurfacing Night Serum: This. Product. Is. Everything. I cannot say enough good things about this serum, seriously. I use this twice a week on the nights I exfoliate and I wake up in the morning to incredibly smooth skin. If I have any trace of an incoming breakout, this clears it right up. The cherry on top is that, since it’s infused with honey, it has a gentle nature to is and both exfoliates while nourishes your skin. If you buy any of the products I mention, buy this.
I use this serum about 2 times a week. If I have any really irritated breakouts I’ll avoid using this product until they’re further along in the healing stage. Even though this is gentle enough, I prefer to wait until I know for sure I’m not causing more damage than good on my skin. That being said, once my breakouts are no longer irritated and I use this, my skin absolutely loves it. I’ll wake up in the morning to my once red breakout turning pink and sometimes just being nearly gone. If used correctly and in moderation this stuff is simply magic.
One thing to note, each time I use this serum I rinse off my hands with water before moving on. Because it is a serum it is super concentrated. Rinsing off your hands is going to avoid your fingers having leftover serum sitting on them overnight, drying them out.
The best exfoliating mask for sensitive skin
Herbivore Prism AHA + BHA Exfoliating Glow Facial: If you’ve ever tried Herbivore in the past, then you know their products are some of the best. This mask is no exception and is one of the most used masks I have in my collection. Even though this contains 20% AHA and 5% BHA, which are numbers that would normally terrify me, it’s a clean and gentle product. If you use this even once a week, your skin will get a fresh cleaning out without doing too much and leaving too little. Fair warning, your skin might tingle a bit the first few times you use it which is completely normal, it’s all a part of the process.
I typically use this mask about once a week. On one of the days I use the above serum, I’ll first start off with applying this mask. Because this mask is high in exfoliating properties, I make sure I only leave it on for about 15-20 minutes. This mask is a gel base, so you need to be careful when washing it off. Just take the time to really rinse your face to make sure you get all of it off.
The best exfoliating toner for sensitive skin
First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads: Basically these are toner pads, you can use these nightly but with sensitive skin I recommend using them about 3 times a week. If you suffer from hormonal breakouts, these will keep them in check while also toning your skin. These pads have just enough exfoliating properties in them to be used regularly even with sensitive skin.
I typically use these toner pads every other day. So I use them 3-4 times a week on average. Because these toner pads are super gentle, they’re fine to use every day if you’d like and I have definitely done this in the past when my skin needs it. However the reason I now use these every other day is because I have other toners I also enjoy using for different purposes. But I definitely opt for these toner pads when I feel my skin needs a little extra detox and exfoliation.
If you wear makeup everyday, these toner pads will be great for cleaning out your skin while rebalancing you out. Whenever I wear a full face of makeup, I always go in with these pads immediately after cleansing my skin.
And there you have it! A serum, a mask and a toner which all make a dynamic trio of the best exfoliating products for sensitive skin. If you tried any of these products let me know in the comments below how they worked for you!
Remember, exfoliating our skin properly is a work of art. Using the right products and putting them all together into a routine is what is going to make a huge difference in your skin.
