Having dry skin can cause a ton of skin issues: from having congested skin, to acne, to all-around dullness and dehydration. None of these things are fun to deal with, and can sometimes result in an endless cycle of over-stripping and over-loading with products. But after years of seemingly trying everything, I’ve compiled a list of simple beauty tips that can stop that endless cycle of skin damage and help your skin flourish- dryness and all. In this blog post, I am going to give you life changing beauty tips for dry skin.

8 life changing beauty tips for dry skin:
1. Wash your face no more than twice daily
Unfortunately, when you have dry skin, it’s a lot more easy to over-strip your skin and dry it out even more. One of the easiest things you can do to avoid this is to stop over-washing your face. So, if you work out in the morning, don’t wash your face until after you’re done. The same goes for if you work out in the evening.
2. Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer
Non-comedogenic simply means it won’t clog your pores. If you have dry skin, then your skin probably has a tendency of getting clogged easily. A lot of the time we think that piling on a super thick moisturizer will combat dryness, but this can result in preventing your skin to breath and thus.. clogged pores. Using a lightweight moisturizer lets your skin to breath the way it’s meant to. If you’re unsure if your skin is congested, feel your face for texture. While some texture if completely normal, a ton of it is a sure sign of your skin telling you it’s congested and needs room to breath. The absolute best moisturizer is the CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion. This stuff is magic, especially for us dry-skin folk.
3. Stop using oils on your face
This is a new one for me. I’ve used oils for years and have sworn by them. But recently I took them out of my routine and my skin has basically transformed. Using oils seemed to counteract the lightweight moisturizer and similar to heavy creams, ended up clogging my pores. I now don’t use any oils in my routine and my skin has never looked and felt better.
4. Swap out oils for overnight masks
With dry skin, you can’t just stop using oils and expect your skin to moisturize itself. After taking out oils from my routine, I started using overnight masks a few times a week (usually when I exfoliate) and my skin loves it. My two favourite are the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask and the Glow Recipe Watermelon + AHA Sleep Mask.
5. Exfoliate MAX twice a week
I have a whole blog post on how to properly exfoliate which you can find here. I explain how and why this is important in that post so I’ll keep this short, you don’t want to dry out your skin even more, so exfoliate less.
6. Invest in a collection of sheet masks
Using sheet masks 1-2 times a week can give your skin some extra moisture without over-doing it. Sheet masks are also great for when you’re going out and wanting to look extra dewy. Personally, I use sheet masks whenever I’m doing a full face of makeup as it gives my skin a nice glowy base to work with.
7. Take probiotics daily
As we talked about earlier, skin congestion can be a side effect of having dry skin. Taking probiotics can help prevent future congestion and improve in overall elasticity and skin health. It’s important to note that the effectiveness can be different for everyone. There are many different types of probiotics so I recommend doing some research before you decide. The probiotics I’ve been taking for years and think great are the Nature’s Bounty Probiotics. Not only are they inexpensive but they also work great, so a total win-win.
8. Try to limit yourself to one cup of coffee a day
I know, this is almost as annoying as telling you to “drink tons of water.” But as annoying as it is, it’s true and fool proof. The more caffeine you intake, the more dehydrated your body becomes. Skin is the largest organ of our body and it’s the first to be affected by dehydration. Remember, having dehydrated skin can’t necessarily be fixed by moisturizer, it’s much more internal than that. So when it comes to our skin, what we put in our bodies is just as important as what we put on it.
And that’s a wrap! I hope this gave you some new insight on how to deal with having dry skin, or just maintaining overall skin health in general. Stay safe and moisturized!
